Important Coaching Information – Please Read

Thank you for a successful first week of practices. It was great seeing the coaches and kids having fun, learning, and enjoying the game. Beginning next week, all Grade 3 to 8 teams will have practice. Schedules for next week and the rest of November have now been posted. Please visit your team’s page on the MPBA Website (MP Basketball ( for your complete schedule.

The main practice facility for our program is the Morris Plains Borough School gym. Over the years, we have established and maintained a long and successful partnership with the school district and along the way made several important investments, including purchasing a new scoreboard and resurfacing the court. Access and use of the gym are important for our program and we require and utilize all available time.  Currently, use of Borough School is limited to Grades 3 to 8.  We utilize Mountain Way School and the Morris Plains Community Center for Grades K to 2.  Practice schedules for K to 2, which begin in December, will be posted shortly.

To provide our program with more scheduling flexibility, we are actively working on securing a second facility nearby that’s suitable for Grades 3 to 8.  If we are successful, this would alter practice locations and schedules.  Any changes would not apply to our November schedule. More to come.

The following is a summary of important information, tips, best practices, and requirements for using the Morris Plains Borough Gym. We hope this information will aid coaches and help ensure a smooth transition from practice to practice and overall use of the gym.

All Coaches Using Borough School Gym

With limited exceptions, each one-hour slot will have two teams practicing at a time and spliting the court. Coaches are strongly encouraged to use the red court divider curtain to help minimize distractions or disruptions for your team. The last team(s) of the night (7:30 – 8:30 pm) must return the court divider curtain to its original position along with the ball locker (padlocks secured) and storage bin. For our newer coaches, the court divider may require an extra set of hands.

Please be mindful and respectful of players and coaches scheduled to use the gym following your practice. This includes returning all basketballs to the ball locker and equipment (e.g., pinnies, cones) to the storage bin. All coaches, players, and parents should promptly vacate the court by the end of their assigned practice times to allow for the next group to start. Practice times are back-to-back.

In the event coaches need extra time to speak with their team during the close of practice, we ask that you please do so off the court, gym lobby, or cafeteria located adjacent to the gym. We understand for certain grade levels wrapping up a practice can sometimes be like herd cats. Be sure to give yourself a time cushion. Again, this will help allow for the next group to start on time.

At Borough School and all other MPBA practice facilities, if schools are closed for any reason (e.g., holidays, inclement weather) then after-school activities, including basketball, are canceled.

Finally, please be sure players and parents take all belongings and appropriately dispense of any trash. It’s not the responsibility of the school janitor on duty to clean up after our use.

Thank you and we look forward to a great season!
